Liwonde First Grade Magistrate Court has adjourned to 15 April 2025 a case in which Democratic Progressive Party Eastern region governor, Daudi Chikwanje, is alleged to have uttered words deemed to be offensive.

The matter has been adjourned on grounds that defence lawyers are yet to renew their licenses which expired on 31 January 2025.

But the State, through Deputy Commissioner of Police Levison Mangani, who is also in charge of prosecutions in the Malawi Police Service, expressed dismay on the reasons for the adjournment, arguing that lawyers are always aware of the status of their licenses.

“As the State we came well prepared with all the witnesses that were ready to testify before the court but we will comply and come in April as suggested,” he said.

Counsel Maurice M’baya, representing the defence, welcomed the decision and said it was difficult for the case to continue without the main defence lawyers until their licenses are valid.

Chikwanje, who is currently on bail, is alleged to have called upon DPP followers to deal with Malawi Congress Party supporters if seen operating in the region.
