The Malawi Kickboxing Association (Makba) is set to introduce a new kickboxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) training program, with the first event scheduled for May 24 at the Blantyre Sports Arena, formerly known as Blantyre Youth Centre.
Bright Limani, Makba’s general secretary, emphasized that the program is designed to equip coaches with advanced skills and knowledge in both kickboxing and MMA. “We want to ensure that our coaches and kickboxers are up to date with the advancements in the sport. We don’t want anyone to be left behind,” Limani said.
The training session comes with a participation fee of K10,000 per individual and K20,000 per club. The goal is to provide an opportunity for local coaches to improve their expertise, benefiting both the trainers and the athletes they mentor.
Arthur Belo, a well-respected mixed martial artist and kickboxing trainer, will lead the training, bringing his extensive experience to the session.
Female kickboxers Thlapelo Hlekule and Angie Jere have expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming event, with both athletes hopeful that the training will help refine their techniques and improve their performance.
The event marks a significant step in the development of kickboxing and MMA in Malawi, further strengthening the country’s presence in the global combat sports scene.
