Concerned residents of Ng’onga in Balaka have taken to the streets today, protesting over land sold to Portland Cement Limited.
The demonstrators are demanding the removal of Balaka District Commissioner (DC) Tamanya Harawa, accusing him of failing to address their grievances.
The protests started at Jussab and are set to end at the Balaka District Council offices, where there is tight security as the protesters arrive. The demonstrators have entered the council’s premises, singing and dancing.
Meanwhile, police have reportedly declined to provide security for the demonstrations, citing their engagement with a visiting Deputy Minister of Local Government.
Council employees have come out to witness the protests, and all offices have been closed as a precautionary measure.
