Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has impounded bottles of liquor which were illegally produced at Mkando Trading Centre in Mulanje District following a tip-off by community members.

Communications Manager for the bureau, Monica Khombe said the businessman, Jons Movirikana, produced the liquor without the MBS approval using non-food grade ethanol and packaged it in 5 litres of plastic bottles which is against the product standards requirements on packaging.

Khombe added that spirit liquor must be packaged in clear glass bottles, as per regulatory requirements.

The businessman has been ordered to pay a fine of K2.7 million.
