Inspector General of Police, Merlyne Yolamu, has called on law enforcement officers to adopt new strategies in tackling gender-based violence (GBV) across Malawi.

Speaking at a training workshop on Gender Mainstreaming and Combating Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (S-GBV) in Lilongwe, Yolamu emphasized the need for effective investigation and response mechanisms to protect both men and women.

“This training is crucial because it highlights that GBV is not only a women’s issue but also affects men. Officers must use this knowledge to enhance how they handle and respond to such cases,” said Yolamu.

Deputy Commissioner for the Eastern Region, Gladson Chipumphula, also stressed the workshop’s importance, especially as Malawi prepares for the September 16 elections. He noted that law enforcement must be well-equipped to handle potential GBV-related incidents that may arise during the electoral period.

The workshop focused on strengthening policies and public engagement in addressing GBV cases, urging officers to work closely with communities in combating violence and ensuring justice for victims.
