The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) has expressed concern over ongoing police operations involving home raids in search of foreign currency. The organization fears that these actions may violate people’s rights, particularly their right to privacy and protection from unlawful searches.
CHRR Executive Director Michael Kaiyatsa stated that several affected individuals have complained that police officers are conducting these home searches without obtaining court warrants. He emphasized that such actions could infringe on citizens’ constitutional rights and called for authorities to follow legal procedures.
“It would be more appropriate for law enforcement officers to secure court warrants before carrying out these operations. If individuals are suspected of illegally possessing foreign currency, they should be arrested and prosecuted through the proper legal channels,” Kaiyatsa said.
When contacted for comment, Reserve Bank of Malawi spokesperson Boston Banda stated that the institution was not aware of the raids, while the Malawi Police Service has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
The development comes amid growing concerns over foreign currency shortages in Malawi, which have led to increased scrutiny of forex dealings and intensified police operations targeting homes and businesses across the country.
