Information reaching this publication indicates that the Tobacco Commission (TC) has successfully intercepted an alleged tobacco smuggling operation at Waliranji in Mchinji.
Acting on a tip-off, the TC, in collaboration with the police, seized a large quantity of tobacco, often referred to as “green gold,” as well as a jack used in the bailing process.
TC spokesperson Telephorus Chigwenembe issued a stern warning, emphasizing that exporting tobacco from Malawi without a proper license is a violation of the Tobacco Industry Act.
In the wake of this incident, concerns have surfaced regarding the sale of tobacco to illegal traders.
Sources in Mchinji indicate that some farmers have been selling tobacco at prices as low as K2000 per kilogram, fueling the rise in illicit trade.
The suspects will appear before court soon.
