Renowned entrepreneur Kondwani Kachamba Ngwira has called on civil servants in Malawi to push for salary increments before the political campaign period begins.
Ngwira made the statement on his official Facebook page today,on 24 February, 2025, warning government employees not to trust politicians to increase their wages once campaign activities are in full swing.
“Civil servants, if you let this opportunity pass, you will never see these people raising your salaries again. Trust them at your own risk,” Ngwira wrote.
He emphasized the rising cost of living, urging public sector workers to unite and pressure the government for better pay.
“You have children to feed, home expenses to cover. Push for salary increments, things are expensive. You have no choice. They have money, but they are saving it for campaigns,” he stated.
Ngwira further urged union representatives to remain firm and reject any refusals from the government.
“This is your country, and you are serving the nation. That money is from your taxes. Do you know how much one political rally costs? Fuel, accommodation, payments for musicians, buying off politicians all that money comes from somewhere. Don’t fall for fake economic calculations. They enjoy numerous benefits apart from their current earnings,” he argued.
He concluded by stressing the economic hardship Malawians are facing, citing the high price of maize as a direct threat to citizens’ well-being.
“Maize is now at K100,000 per 50kg bag. You will starve your children,” he warned.
Ngwira’s statement has sparked discussions among civil servants and union leaders as calls for salary adjustments continue to grow amidst the ongoing economic challenges in the country.
