The Malawi Police Service has arrested one suspect in connection with the political violence that erupted on Sunday in Machinga.

According to a statement issued by National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya, investigations are ongoing to bring all perpetrators to justice.

Kalaya has urged young people to refrain from being used by politicians to incite violence, warning that law enforcement will not hesitate to take action against anyone found engaging in political-related crimes.

“Acts of violence are criminal, and police will ensure that all those responsible face the law, especially during this critical period as the country heads towards elections,” Kalaya stated.

The violence in Nselema Trading Centre saw several people injured and multiple vehicles vandalized, including one belonging to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
