Malawian beloved artist Kelly Kambwiri, popularly known as Kell Kay, has opened up about his financial struggles during the shooting of the 2017 music video Mr. Yesu, which he did with Gwamba.

In a Facebook post Kell Kay Made yesterday 24th February, 2025, the artist reflected on how difficult things were for him financially, despite being a well-known artist at the time. He revealed that he had to borrow clothes from friends for the video shoot, as he could not afford to buy his own.

“Throwback to 2017 when we shot the Mr. Yesu music video! I recall borrowing some essential items from my friends, a jacket and jeans from Gwamba, and shoes from VJ Ice, who directed the video. I only had a white shirt and socks of my own. Even the tie was borrowed. As for a watch, let’s not even go there,” he wrote.

Kell Kay used his story to inspire fans, emphasizing the importance of faith and perseverance. “Moral of the story: no matter the situation, always believe God has a plan to change your life for the better! Amen.”

Meanwhile, Ntizens  have resurfaced photos suggesting that the artist wore the same borrowed necktie during his graduation ceremony, further highlighting his financial hardships at the time.

Kell Kay has since risen to become one of Malawi’s most successful artists, proving that persistence and faith can lead to success.
