Old Mutual (Malawi) Limited says all is set for the company to award top students who participated in the 9th edition of the Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad.

The prize presentation ceremony for the 2024/2025 season is scheduled for 3 March- 2025 at the Mzuzu University (MZUNI) campus.

The Maths Olympiad is run in collaboration with Mzuni’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics and it draws together senior level secondary students across the country.

Speaking in an interview, Old Mutual Marketing and Corporate Affairs Executive Patience Chatsika expressed joy seeing the 2024/2025 season coming to an end after investing MK34 million.

“We are excited that finally, we will be presenting prizes to top performing students in the competition. Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad is our flagship sponsorship, this is where we demonstrate our commitment to advancing STEM subjects which include Science, Technology and Mathematics in Malawi- a catchment area for nurturing mathematical young minds that are needed in the finance services sector.” she said.

According to Chatsika, Mathematics is not merely a subject taught in classrooms; it is the foundation upon which the development of the nation is built.

She said Mathematics has been and will remain a key contributor to Malawi’s development.

“In the recent past, we have seen countries including Malawi changing their education syllabi to align to the changing needs of our industries. For example, we have seen expressive arts and technology being introduced in our education system. Through all these disruptions Mathematics has remained the core subject as it has always been crucial in nurturing critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders of tomorrow. This subject empowers students with problem solving skills, logical reasoning, and creativity, all of which are essential in the development of our nation,” she said.

Old Mutual has been sponsoring the Mathematics Olympiad since 2015 when the sponsorship was resuscitated. In the recent past, Old Mutual also sponsored a six member Malawi team that participated at the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) where they brought home a bronze medal.

Mathematics Olympiads are competitive exams designed to challenge and enhance students’ mathematical problem-solving skills.
