A one-year and two-month-old baby, Walani Brown, tragically lost his life yesterday after falling into a pit latrine in Nsanje.

Nsanje Police spokesperson, Sub Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, confirmed the incident, stating that the baby’s mother had taken him outside for a bath. However, she briefly went into the house to collect bathing materials, leaving the child unattended.

“In that short moment, the baby crawled towards the pit latrine near the house and accidentally fell in. Despite efforts to rescue him, it was too late,” said Sub Inspector Zalakoma.

The incident was reported to the police by the baby’s father, Kondwani Brown, 37. A post-mortem revealed that the child died due to suffocation.

Walani Brown was from Brighton Village under Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje.
