Gwengwe Fired, Replaced With Mumba

President Lazarus Chakwera has fired Minister of Trade and Industry, Honorable Sosten Gwengwe, in the midst of an ongoing dispute over second-hand clothing prices.

Gwengwe has been replaced by Eng. Vitumbiko Mumba, who previously headed the Ministry of Labour. That position has now been assigned to Peter Dimba.

A few days ago, vendors in Lilongwe staged protests over the high prices of second-hand clothes, taking their grievances to Parliament. In response, Gwengwe publicly revoked the licenses of Chinese and Indian second-hand clothing wholesalers.

Yesterday, the wholesalers reacted by lowering the prices of some second-hand bales. Further reports indicate that vendors from Limbe Market in Blantyre are also expected to stage similar protests.
