
Ex-convict arrested for burglary at Jenda

Police at Jenda in Mzimba have arrested an Ex-convict, Thafuton Mtonga, 35, for breaking into the house of Chandiwira Mphande at night in an attempt to steal a motorcycle at Champhira in the district.
The arrest on March 4, 2025, followed reports from members of the community that they had apprehended a suspect who was later assaulted by a mob and, on their way to the police, managed to escape.
It has been established that on March 4, 2025, at around 01:00 hours in the morning, Chandiwira Mphande heard a bang on his door, and when he woke up, he saw an unknown person trying to steal his motorcycle.
He shouted for help, and members of the community managed to arrest the suspect.
On their way to the Police, a mob overpowered them and started assaulting the suspect heavily, who later managed to escape from the mob after being wounded.
The matter was later reported at Jenda Police station, where officers rushed to the scene for investigations.
After searching in the nearby Champhira forest reserve, he was found hiding and seriously wounded.
Upon his arrest, he managed to confess to having an accomplice who fled the scene when he was being attacked by the mob.
Investigations are under way to trace the second suspect. Thafuton Mtonga, who was sentenced in the past for house breakings, has been charged with burglary contrary to section 309 subsection 2 of the penal code.
Thafuton Mtonga, who comes from Kamchocho village, Traditional Authority Simulemba in Kasungu district, will be taken to court soon upon completion of paperwork to answer his charges.
