The Lilongwe Council has given permission to Ras Chikomeni Chirwa to hold a big walk on March 11 in the city aimed at raising funds for nomination fees.

The letter signed by the head of the council, Mr. Macloud Kadam’manja, said Mr. Chirwa should talk to the police about security on the day and not to wear any party slogans because they will be collecting money from different people.

In his response, Ras Chikomeni said that this decision has shown that Malawi respects the principles of democracy, and he has asked people to come in large numbers on the day of the campaign.

At first the council rejected their request, which cited the need for Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) approval first.

Ras Chikomeni was disqualified in the 2019 tripartite elections due to unmet requirements, including the payment of a K2 million nomination fee.
