The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) has confirmed that all opposition parties in the country are in discussions about forming an alliance ahead of the September 16 elections.
Speaking at a political rally in Mzimba on Sunday, AFORD President Enock Chihana said talks are ongoing but did not elaborate on their progress. However, he expressed confidence that a united opposition could remove the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) from power.
Chihana also urged President Lazarus Chakwera to order the police to arrest those responsible for a recent attack on his convoy. He argued that without the initial alliance, MCP would not have won the last election and should now protect freedom of speech and association.
He further claimed that the alliance agreement he signed with MCP stated that Chakwera would only serve one term, with the late Saulos Chilima taking over for the next.
