A 26-year-old Jefferson Lungu of Group Village Headman Diere, under Traditional Authority Mpherembe in Mzimba has died after being attacked by a crocodile at Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve.
Ministry of Tourism Spokesperson, Joseph Nkosi says this occurred on sunday when Lungu and his two colleagues illegally entered the protected area to engage in fishing in South Rukuru river.
Nkosi says the trio had set fishing traps across the river inside the reserve and at approximately 6:00 AM, they ventured out to check the traps, but during their journey, Jefferson slipped and fell.
His friends attempted to locate him but were unsuccessful before discovering a crocodile carrying his body. After efforts, they retrieved the body which had serious cuts to the right leg and right shoulder.
Due the condition of the body, the deceased’s relatives and local leaders decided to bury him that same afternoon without involving medical personnel and the police.
