The Mchinji District Council has announced a ban on the sale of fresh and boiled maize (Dowe/Mondokwa) effective March 14, 2025.
According to an official letter signed by Mchinji District Commissioner Lucia Chidalengwa, the directive applies to all vendors across the district and has been communicated to the police, traditional leaders, and other relevant authorities.
Chidalengwa warned that anyone found selling fresh maize after the stated date will face strict penalties, as the act remains illegal under the country’s laws.
She further stated that the ban will remain in effect until all maize crops have fully dried in the fields.
