Two men, Mavuto Shaba, 41, and his brother Nemon Shaba, 45, have been sentenced to seven years in prison by the Mzimba Magistrate Court for injuring their relatives during a dispute over unpaid debts.

The incident occurred on January 15, when the two men attacked their relatives, Jevas Shaba and Timothy Shaba, after a quarrel over a disagreement on property. The altercation resulted in injuries to the two victims.

During the court proceedings, the accused expressed regret for their actions, pleading for leniency. They explained that if sentenced to prison, they would be unable to repay the debt they owe to the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF). They appealed for the court to consider their financial difficulties and reconsider their sentence.

However, the court ruled that they must serve their sentence, stating that their actions were inexcusable and that the law must be upheld regardless of their financial circumstances. The two men were convicted of grievous bodily harm and will begin serving their sentence immediately.
