Nakonde, Zambia – Authorities at the Nakonde Border detained Mpika-based Catholic Missionary Brother Robert Zebedde Harawa, OSB, commonly known as Brother Oscar, over a misunderstanding regarding his study permit while he was traveling to Tanzania for a funeral.

Brother Oscar, a Missionary Benedictine Monk originally from Malawi, was held on Wednesday night after immigration officials misinterpreted the expiry date on his study permit, which was listed as “03.04.2025.” Officials believed it had expired on March 4, 2025, while Brother Oscar insisted it was valid until April 3, 2025.

Speaking to Yusufu Radio News, Brother Oscar said immigration officers demanded K12,000.00 for permit renewal, but due to the late hour (18:00), the payment could not be processed, leading to his detention at Nakonde Police Station. He described his experience in the police cells as unpleasant, citing overcrowding and harsh conditions.

Fr. Bernard Mwanza, the former Superior of St. Thérèse of Lisieux Benedictine Monastery in Katibunga, Mpika, confirmed Brother Oscar’s detention, while Bishop Edwin Mwansa Mulandu of Mpika Diocese expressed solidarity with him, offering prayers and words of support.

Brother Oscar was released on Thursday morning and has since continued his journey to Tanzania. The full resolution of his case is expected upon his return to Zambia.
