The Senior Resident Magistrate’s court sitting at Lilongwe has convicted and sentenced Yusufu Mussah, 40, to 20 years imprisonment for having sexual intercourse with a 7-year-old girl in the capital city.
The court heard from State Prosecutor Inspector Bauleni Namasani of Lilongwe Police, that the convict committed the offence between the months of January and March in 2021.
Lilongwe Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer Khumbo Sanyiwa said taking advantage that the victim’s father was away, the convict invited her to his house, and later drugged her to his bedroom where he ended up having sexual intercourse with the girl.
Despite the convict threatening that he would stab the victim if she revealed her ordeal to any person, the girl narrated everything to her grandmother which was later reported to police.
Appearing in court, Mussah pleaded guilty to the charge of Rape. In mitigation, he asked for leniency to the court saying he is a first time offender.
But in his submission, Inspector Namasani, prayed for stiffer custodial sentence citing the seriousness of the offence the convict committed.
Passing his sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Wanangwa Nyirenda, said that the girl was forced into sexual act without her consent as she did not have the capacity to do so.
Nyirenda then went on to sentence Mussah to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour.
Yusufu Mussah hails from Mussa Village, Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba District.
