Police in Nkhotakota District have arrested Emmanuel Matumba (40) for allegedly attempting to smuggle 19,800 liters of fuel to Mozambique. However, Matumba has refused to reveal where he bought the fuel.

According to Nkhotakota Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Chisomo Chuma, investigations are still ongoing, and so far, there is no evidence confirming that the fuel was purchased from any registered fuel station in Malawi.

“Officials from the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) have taken samples of the fuel to test whether it is Diesel or Petrol,” said Chuma.

Matumba was arrested last week along with Juwawo Mndala (52), a Mozambican national who was supposed to transport the fuel using his boat on Lake Malawi.

Police are continuing investigations into the matter.
