A large number of police officers have arrived at the Lilongwe court, where Chief Resident Magistrate Austin Banda will decide if Alfred Gangata should be given bail.
Yesterday, the government asked the court to keep Gangata in custody, saying their witnesses are being threatened.
Gangata, who is the deputy leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the central region, is accused of getting his Form Four certificate in a dishonest way.
Police say he never studied at Chitowo School in Dedza, where he claims to have earned the certificate.
