Malawi has lost a fearless and brave human rights advocate, Charles Ben Longwe, who played a big role in fighting for justice and democracy.
Longwe was known for his strong voice in calling for mindset change and shaping the country’s political landscape. His efforts in defending human rights and democracy earned him respect across different sectors.
Before his last breath, Longwe made a video of himself confirming that he was hospitalised and he later thanked people for showing him support as a bid farewell.
The United Democratic Front (UDF) has also expressed sadness over his passing. In a statement, UDF publicity secretary Dyson Jangia described Longwe as a man of wisdom whose values and thoughts resonated well with many in the party.
Though he is gone, Jangia said Longwe’s contributions will always be remembered by Malawians.
Longwe died yesterday in Thyolo due to a swollen leg, according to his associate Bon Kalindo.
