The family of celebrated BBC journalist Sophie Ikenye has appealed for financial assistance to raise KSh 5 million for her medical expenses.
In a statement shared by journalist Phillip Etale, the family revealed that Ikenye has been undergoing treatment for the past eight months across various medical facilities, leaving them financially exhausted.
“As a family, we have done everything possible to support her medical care, but we have now exhausted all available funds. We are reaching out to family, friends, fans, and well-wishers to help us raise KSh 5 million to facilitate urgent surgery and ongoing treatment,” the statement read.
The appeal has drawn mixed reactions, with many social media users sending messages of support and prayers for Ikenye’s recovery. However, some have criticized the BBC for not stepping in to assist the veteran journalist, who has served the network for 15 years.
The family has also requested prayers but has not disclosed details regarding her illness.
