The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority-MACRA is set to roll-out a SIM card and mobile phone re-registration exercise to reduce money fraud and cybercrimes.

MACRA Director General Daudi Suleiman this in Zomba during a lecture on digital rights, laws and myths at the University Malawi-UNIMA last Friday.

According to the Malawi News Agency, students asked various questions to MACRA Director General especially on money fraud and other cybercrimes.

In response to a question relating to the influx of mobile money fraud, Suleiman said efforts are being made to deal with cybercrimes, including plans to re-register the SIM cards.

He said unlike in the past where letters from chiefs, passport and other documents were used, the authority, will this time use national identity cards as an identity in the SIM card re registration.

Apart from registering SIM cards, the Director General also disclosed that there will be registration of mobile phones including those coming into the country.
