Police in Salima are keeping in custody a 34-year-old identified as for being found in possession of Indian hemp (chamba) without the required legal documents.
According to Salima Police Public Relations Officer, Rebecca Ndiwate, Likagwa was intercepted by officers conducting a routine checkpoint at Chikumba along the Nkhotakota-Salima road.
Police signaled Likagwa, who was driving a Toyota Sienta, to stop, but he attempted to speed away. Officers pursued the vehicle and upon searching it, they discovered 263 jumbo-sized packs of Indian hemp.
When questioned, Likagwa failed to produce any legal documentation permitting him to possess the substance. He has since been taken into custody and is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to illegal possession of Indian hemp.
