The Malawi Police Service has raised concerns over the increasing number of illegal firearms being smuggled into the country, primarily by citizens from South Africa, Burundi, and Rwanda.
National Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Harry Namwaza, confirmed that while cases of illegal firearm possession are on the rise, law enforcement continues to conduct searches and seize weapons. He called on the public to support police efforts by providing tips and forming neighborhood watch groups to help identify and apprehend suspects.
Security expert Master Mfune attributes the issue to Malawi’s porous borders and the presence of illegal immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees, some of whom are reportedly wanted criminals in their home countries.
Mfune also warned that with elections approaching, there is a risk that politicians could exploit individuals with illegal firearms to fuel violence, as has happened in the past. He urged authorities to act swiftly to prevent potential security threats.
