Harry Namwaza, National Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, has highlighted the growing threat of illegal firearms in Malawi, most of which are smuggled in by citizens from neighboring countries like South Africa, Burundi, and Rwanda.

Namwaza acknowledged that while cases of illegal firearm possession are on the rise, police are intensifying efforts to conduct searches and seize the weapons.

He urged the public to collaborate with law enforcement by providing tips and forming neighborhood watch groups to help apprehend suspects.

Security expert Master Mfune pointed to Malawi’s porous borders and the influx of illegal immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees—some of whom are wanted criminals in their home countries—as key factors behind the rise in illegal firearms.

Mfune also warned that with elections approaching, politicians may exploit individuals with illegal firearms, potentially fueling violence if authorities don’t act swiftly.
