Police in Chitipi, Lilongwe County, have arrested a 30-year-old motorcycle operator, Mike Banda, on suspicion of stealing two motorcycles worth K6.7 million, dismantling them, and selling the parts for K1.2 million.
According to Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, Banda was arrested this week, and officers tracked him to Area 36, where he allegedly dismantled and sold the parts.
During the operation, police also arrested 21-year-old Peter Sabonya, the owner of a motorcycle parts shop, on suspicion of possessing stolen goods. Sabonya is accused of buying the stolen motorcycles for K600,000 each.
Additionally, police seized 20 motorcycle helmets, 22 dismantled motorcycles, and 18 motorbikes.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of theft and possession of stolen property.
