The Magistrate Court in Lilongwe has granted bail to well-known social media influencer Julius Mithi, who is facing charges of spreading false information online.

Mithi was accused of publishing false news on his Facebook page, alleging that 1.1 million voters were removed from the voter registry by the National Registration Bureau (NRB) and the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC). The allegations sparked public concern, prompting legal action.

During the court proceedings yesterday, Mithi pleaded not guilty to the charges. This morning, Principal Resident Magistrate Benjamin Chulu granted bail as requested by Mithi’s lawyer, Khwima Mchizi.

The case continues as Mithi awaits trial.
