A court in Mchinji District has sentenced 30-year-old Huseni Kabichi of Kazyozyo Village in the Kazyozyo Chiefdom to four years in prison for impersonating a Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier.

Prosecutor Omar Amuli from the Mkanda Sub-District Police Station told the court that earlier this month, village security forces arrested Kabichi in Fanuel Village, Mkanda Chiefdom, while wearing military attire.

Amuli added that Kabichi took loans from villagers, falsely claiming that he worked at the MDF’s Gada Farm in Kazyozyo.

When brought to court, Kabichi denied the charges, prompting the prosecution to call three witnesses to testify.

Delivering her verdict, Judge Annie Simwaka agreed with the prosecution’s request for a harsher sentence, citing the seriousness of the offense.

Kabichi had pleaded for a lighter sentence, arguing that he needed to support his family, but the court rejected his appeal.
