Police in Lilongwe have arrested 38-year-old Grant Mpasu, who is suspected of cutting copper wires that supplied oxygen to a premature baby ward and a recovering mother at Bwaila Hospital.

According to Lilongwe police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, the suspect allegedly committed the act on March 21, resulting in an oxygen supply failure that led to the suffocation and death of seven infants.

Chigalu stated that on the night of the incident, a night-shift nurse encountered Mpasu and questioned him, but he refused to respond, prompting the nurse to alert security personnel.

Upon investigation, security officers apprehended Mpasu and led them to the hospital’s roof, where they discovered his bag containing the stolen copper wires.

Hospital officials confirmed that Mpasu was an electrician working for a company that had recently repaired the oxygen pipeline supplying the ward for newborns and recovering mothers.
