A close ally of former President Peter Mutharika, Leonard Chimbanga has said the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is not desperate for alliance ahead of the September 16 2025 general election.

Chimbanga said this amid reports that three opposition political parties namely; Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), United Transformation Movement (UTM) and United Democratic Front (UDF) are contemplating of forming an alliance ahead of the polls.

The leaders of the said political parties met over the weekend.

Writing on his official facebook page Chimbanga said alliance made out of frustrations are disastrous.

“This business of coming together just to remove one party like we saw in 2020 is not a noble mission. Nine parties ganged up on DPP, and after winning, confusion took over, and agreements were thrown out just like that.

“DPP has no reason to panic over alliance talks. We know who we are and what we stand for. If anyone shares our values, we can talk but we’re not desperate for handshakes and selfies,” said Chimbanga.

He added: “Even MCP, as much as I may not like them, are not losing sleep over these things. That’s how strong parties behave they focus on their mission, not noise.”

Mutharika is scheduled to face the incumbent President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) on September 16, 2025 polls.
