Minister of Trade, Vitumbiko Mumba, has given Bread Talk, one of Malawi’s leading bread manufacturing companies, a two-day ultimatum to reduce the price of bread from K3,800 to K3,200.

The minister made the directive during a monitoring tour on Monday where he visited various bread-producing companies to assess their compliance with government’s recent directive to cut bread prices.

Although Bread Talk recently reduced the price of bread from K4,100 to K3,800, Mumba expressed dissatisfaction with the adjustment, stressing that the reduction did not align with the Ministry of Finance’s recommendations.

“We are not satisfied. The target is K3,200. We’re giving Bread Talk two days to revise the price further,” said Mumba.

The government recently instructed manufacturers to revise the cost of bread following changes in production input costs and in a bid to ease pressure on consumers amid the rising cost of living.
