
Woman Caught Smuggling Phones and Cannabis into Zomba Maximum Prison

Zomba Police have arrested a 49-year-old woman, Esmey Hamisi, for attempting to smuggle eight brand-new mobile phones into Zomba Central Prison.
According to Zomba Police Public Relations Officer Patricia Sipiliano, the suspect had visited the prison under the pretext of bringing food to a relative currently serving a sentence at the facility.
However, as per standard prison procedures, officers conducted a routine check of the food items before delivering them to the inmate. It was during this inspection that the authorities discovered the concealed contraband.
Hidden within the food were: Eight new mobile phones, five phone chargers, five memory cards, additional batteries, aquantity of Indian hemp (locally known as chamba) All of which had been carefully wrapped in sugar packets.
Hamisi, who hails from Makanjira Village under Traditional Authority Makanjira in Mangochi District, is expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to smuggling prohibited items into a correctional facility.
Zomba Police have since warned the public against engaging in such illegal activities, emphasizing that security checks at prison facilities remain strict and uncompromising.
