The Midima First Grade Magistrate court has convicted and sentenced George M’mangitsa, 47, to eight years and five months Imprisonment with Hard Labour for having sexual relations with a four year old girl.
The court heard through state prosecutor, Sub Inspector Annie Kamwendo that, on November 15, 2024, the victim’s mother noticed that her daughter was having difficulties in walking and that she produced strange substance from her private parts.
Up on being questioned by her mother and aunt, the child told the two women that she was persuaded by an unknown man to join him and that she would later be given sweets.
Prosecutor Kamwendo further told the court that, the two reported the matter to Limbe police where the child was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and a medical report confirmed sexual assault on the child.
In was noted in the court that, Police investigations led to the arrest of the convict who pleaded not guilty to the charge and thereby prompting the state to parade three witnesses to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.
In his mitigation, M’mangitsa pleaded the court for a lighter sentence citing that he looks after seven children but Prosecutor Kamwendo prayed for a stiffer sentence to deter would-be offenders.
Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Lameck Mkwapatira agreed with the state’s submissions and therefore sentenced him to 8 years and 5 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour.
George M’mangitsa hails from Foliji village Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo district.
Having sexual intercourse with a minor is a criminal offence that contravenes section 131(1) of the penal code.
