The legal battle involving United Transformation Movement (UTM) party advisor Patricia Kaliati continues to unfold, as the former cabinet minister appeared in court today to face charges linked to an alleged assassination plot against Malawi’s President. Kaliati, who was arrested in October last year and later granted bail, has denied the accusations.
The state alleges that she was involved in orchestrating a plan to eliminate the state president, a claim that has raised eyebrows across the political spectrum. During the brief court appearance, the prosecution, led by Levison Mangani, announced its intention to call 15 witnesses once the trial commences.
On the other hand, defense lawyer Khwima Mchizi acknowledged receipt of the state’s documentary evidence and indicated that a thorough review is underway. The case has been adjourned and is expected to resume on April 28, when the full hearing will begin.
