A two-year-old girl, Esnart Mustafa, tragically drowned in a nearby pond while her mother was engaged in household chores.

Mangochi Police Station Spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi has told us that the incident occurred on the evening of 7 April 2025, at Ntiyala Village, under Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi District.

According to reports, Esnart was playing at home while her 25-year-old mother, Sarah Ibra, attended to chores. Upon realizing that her daughter was missing, she began searching and proceeded to a nearby pond, where she discovered a cup and pail, items the child had been playing with floating on the water.

Alarmed by the discovery, she called for help from neighbors, who joined in the search. Sadly, the child was found lifeless in the pond shortly afterward.

The incident was reported to Koche Police Unit, who responded to the scene alongside a medical practitioner. A postmortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was suffocation.
