Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel has publicly stated he will never bleach his skin again, acknowledging that his past decision to lighten his complexion stemmed from issues with self-love.
The artist, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, made the revelation during a recent interview on Hot97 radio with host Ebro Darden.
“Looking back, it definitely had to do with self-love,” Kartel admitted. “At the time I told myself it was to show my tattoos better, but now I realize it was deeper than that. As a Black man, we sometimes struggle with these things. But I would never bleach again.”
The controversial artist, who was recently released from prison after a decade-long legal battle, also shared that he has cut down on drinking and smoking. He revealed plans to marry his Turkish girlfriend Sidem Öztürk and expressed hopes of having “Turkish children.”
Kartel’s skin-lightening transformation had been a major talking point during his career peak, with critics accusing him of promoting colorism. His latest comments mark one of his most reflective statements on the matter since his release.
The dancehall icon remains one of Jamaica’s most popular artists despite his legal troubles, with fans eagerly awaiting new music following his freedom.
