Authorities in Nkhotakota District have rescued 12 children and 3 women who were being kept like a family by a man known as Abasi on Sungu Island in Lake Malawi.

According to reports, the three women were all married to the man, and 11 of the children are believed to be his, while one is a relative.

McDonald Mpichi, who leads the district’s social welfare office, expressed concern, saying the situation violated the children’s rights to education and proper health care. “Even when sick, they wouldn’t go to the hospital because of transport challenges on the island.

“This is a clear violation of child protection laws,” Mpichi said.

The rescued women and children are now receiving medical care at the district hospital after being found unwell.
