A continued shortage of sugar in major retail shops across Zomba City is pushing desperate consumers to turn to the black market, where prices have surged far above the recommended retail price.

It shows  that some outlets have gone nearly two weeks without restocking sugar, a situation that is creating panic among residents.

As a result, the scarcity has triggered a sharp rise in prices on the black market, with a one kilogram packet now fetching K3,700.

Well above the government recommended price of K2,950. Kelvin Banda, a resident of Chikanda township, expressed concern over the escalating prices, describing the situation as worrisome for ordinary consumers.
