Witchcraft Accusations Drive Man to Suicide in Zambia

A 64-year-old man from Makula Village, Sinazongwe District in Zambia, has died by suicide after consuming suspected rat poison amid witchcraft accusations.

The deceased identified as Fred Siamaila took his own life 9th April 2025 around 04:00 hours the following day.According to Sinenge Ward Councillor Tyke Siachaluza, who reported the matter to Sinazeze Police Post, the deceased had been accused of practising witchcraft.

His neighbour alleged that he had bewitched their daughter, who had been unwell for nearly two years.
The deceased’s daughter, who resides in Mumbwa District, claimed she had been unable to have marital relations with her husband, alleging that she would see her father’s face and accusing him of appearing in her dreams.

The daughter reportedly travelled to Makula Village to confront her father and demand that he undo any charms he had cast.
Upon hearing these accusations, Fred Siamaila summoned his family members and indicated where he wished to be buried.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police Auxensio Daka confirmed that the deceased later consumed poison, leading to his death.
