A man identified as Tone Nyirongo, aged 19, has died after shooting himself in the head with a gun (Muzzle loader) at Lupachi along the boundary between Mzimba and Nkhotakota.
The incident occurred on April 11, 2025, in the village of Leven, Traditional Authority Kafuzira.
It has been established that Tone Nyirongo (now deceased), before the incident, told his sister that his brothers should harvest his beans from the field when he is gone, not knowing he meant after killing himself. After saying this, he entered his house.
His brothers and sister, who were outside, heard a gunshot from inside his house.
Upon entering the house, they discovered that he had shot himself in the head with a manmade gun (Muzzle loader).
The matter was reported to Champhira Police post and later at Jenda Police station as it is the closest Police formation as compared to Nkhotakota.
Officers from Jenda and Champhira visited the crime scene together with medical personnel from Hoho health centre, where they established that he shot himself in the forehead, and the bullet got stuck inside the head, causing it to swell extensively. The gun has been taken to Jenda Police for further examination.
A postmortem conducted by medical personnel indicates that the cause of death is due to severe loss of blood secondary to a gunshot.
Preliminary investigations indicate suicide, according to his relative’s accounts; however, Police investigations are still underway to have all the facts established on the matter.
The Police are encouraging members of the community to always seek help when they have psychological issues from the victim support unit office available at Jenda Police station.
The station further warns people that it is illegal to keep unlicenced guns, and they should inform the Police of anyone suspected of keeping such unlicenced guns.
Tone Nyirongo hailed from Leven Village, Traditional Authority Kafuzira in Nkhotakota district.
