Police have confirmed that Solomon Kamunda, a driver for the Chikwawa District Council, died while receiving medical treatment at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre yesterday.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Edward Kabango confirmed the development, stating that police had intended to shoot Kamunda in the leg as he attempted to escape from custody.

Kabango said Kamunda was connected to cases involving the theft of K123 million in October and K100 million in December last year from various locations in Blantyre.

According to Kabango, the deceased is believed to have used a government vehicle to carry out these activities with his accomplices until he was arrested last Thursday in Blantyre.

Kamunda, aged 48, hailed from Chikhambi Village, Traditional Authority Kasisi, in Chikwawa District.
