Businessman and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Central Region, Alfred Gangata, appeared before the Principal Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe today, where Magistrate Benjamin Chulu is expected to deliver a ruling on the defense’s application to have some charges struck off the charge sheet.
Gangata is facing charges of falsifying tax records, uttering a false document, forgery, and conducting a transaction without a tax clearance certificate. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
His lawyer, Zwelethini Chipembere, has asked the court to drop some of the charges, arguing that they are outdated as they stem from 2017.
However, the State has maintained that the charges remain valid and relevant under the law.\
