Principal Resident Magistrate Clemence Chamwenda has granted bail to Yeremiah Chihana, who appeared before the Mzuzu Magistrate’s Court this morning.
Under the bail conditions, Chihana is required to surrender his passport and other travel documents to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). He must also not interfere with or contact any state witnesses.
Chihana has been ordered to pay a cash bond of K1 million and provide one reliable surety, who will be bonded at K10 million. He is also required to report to ACB officers every second Monday, starting in two weeks.
Chihana is facing three charges: two counts of abuse of public office and one count of failure to declare interest.
Lawyer for the accused Wapona Kita said he is impressed with the proceedings, however expressed worry as to why state led with arrest when they could not make him take a plea today.
