Police in Thyolo District have arrested two individuals on suspicion of stealing ten bags of maize that were being distributed by the government to people suffering from hunger.
According to the district police spokesperson, Rabecca Kashoti, the suspects are a council security guard, Aubrey Malindi, and Leonard Jika, 39, who is the assistant driver of the truck transporting the maize.
Kashoti explained that the two, along with the truck driver—who is currently on the run—were transporting the maize to Ntambanyama, where the council is distributing food aid. However, on the way, they allegedly stopped and sold ten bags of maize to vendors.
When members of the public spotted them, the suspects reportedly abandoned the truck and fled.
Police later apprehended Malindi and Jika, while investigations into the matter are ongoing.
