The Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) has strongly condemned two recent and disturbing abduction attempts involving children with albinism in Mulanje and Mwanza districts, citing rising threats ahead of the country’s general election.
On April 18, 2025, 3- year-old Foster Harry was abducted in Mombe village under Traditional Authority in Mulanje. According to APAM, the child was under care of his 11 years old relative when a man approached, demanded the boy and use force to snatch him after being declined. community members quickly responded to the minor’s cries for help forcing the abductor to abandon the child and flee.
Three days earlier on April 15, a 1- year and3- month-old child with albinism was nearly trafficked across the boarder into Mozambique. The suspect, identified as Chrissy Lotifala, a Mozambican national had allegedly engaged the child’s mother in casual labor.
Following a disagreement over payment, Lotifala abducted the baby while the mother was away. The Police were informed about the deal and intercepted the suspect before she could cross the boarder.
According to APAM, these crimes represents serious human rights violation and a disturbing resurgence in attacks against persons with albinism have been recorded including two abduction and one case of graveyard tampering.
“Together we must build a society where every person with albinism lives without fear,” Muhamba said. “We will not rest until justice is served.”
The organization has called authorities, especially the Malawi Police services, to step up protection efforts and appealed to civil society, development partners and the public for urgent support in raising awareness and combating harmful myths that endanger the lives of people with albinism
