Police in Phalombe have arrested a 32-year-old man, Boniface Kasoti, for allegedly possessing smuggled fuel.
Police spokesperson Jimmy Kapanja said Kasoti was arrested at the Likangala border post during a routine patrol. Officers found him carrying 300 litres of fuel in 15 jerrycans on his motorcycle.
“The suspect failed to show any documents permitting him to transport such a large quantity of fuel,” Kapanja said. “We believe this fuel was illegally brought into the country.”
Authorities are investigating where the fuel came from and whether more people are involved. Fuel smuggling has become a growing problem in border areas, affecting local businesses and the economy.
Kasoti remains in custody and will appear in court soon to face charges. If convicted, he could be jailed or fined under Malawi’s customs laws.
Police have warned the public against buying or transporting fuel without proper paperwork, as it is illegal and could lead to arrest.
